Beginning this Sunday, we head back into the gospel of Luke for a few weeks. We’ll start by hearing from Luke 9:51-56.
This passage serves as a transition. For the last 6 chapters, we have been observing Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. He has been preaching and teaching and healing. And, for the next 10 chapters, we will observe Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. In our passage this weekend, Jesus concludes his Galilean ministry, and actively moves toward Jerusalem, in anticipation of his death for sin.
And, as we’ll see, he encounters a number of things along the way. The first of which is a village of Samaritans who reject him. And, rather than calling down fire from heaven (like his disciples are asking him to do), Jesus humbly endures it and moves on. We’ll consider together what this text means for us, as Christians.
