This Sunday, we will begin a new sermon series, working through the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1, giving particular attention to the names of 5 women that are mentioned in it - Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary. We’ll look at each of their respective stories, ending with story of Mary and the birth of Jesus, just before Christmas.

We’ll begin with Tamar, in Genesis 38. The story is mildly shocking when you first come across it - full of deception, betrayal, sex, and death. But, as we read it, we come to see truths about God, sin, repentance, forgiveness. Most notably, we will see the perseveration of the family line that will one day culminate in the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
