This Sunday, we will be examining Luke 8:1-3. At first glance, this looks like a text that you can rush past. Mere details that were thrown in to help the narrative transition from one story to the next.
But, upon closer inspection, we see that they are massively important, and they give us insight into the heart of God. We see that Jesus not only invited 12 male disciples to follow him, and learn from him. He also invited many women to follow him and learn from him as well.
Jesus mobilized these women to do ministry. He invited them to serve in meaningful ways. His entire ministry was literally dependent on them, and they gave generously to fund it. Women were not forgotten or marginalized in Jesus’s ministry. They were at the forefront of it. At the center of it.
This Sunday, we will consider how Jesus’s life and ministry on earth was evidence of God’s heart for women. And we will consider the implications of that reality for us as the church today.
