Briefly describe the main theme(s) of Leviticus 26.
What are some of the promises that God gives the people of Israel if they will keep his commandments? (26:3-13)
God gives several promises pertaining to physical things like land, harvest, military victory, peace, prosperity, etc. (26:3-10) But then he gives a weightier promise, that he will dwell with them and be with them. (26:11-13) What implications does this have for us, in our lives as Christians today?
What are some of the warnings that God gives the people of Israel if they rebel, and ignore his commandments? (26:14-39)
What promises does God make regarding their future redemption and restoration? What do the people of Israel have to do to experience that? (26:40-45)
In 26:14-39, it seems that the judgment and discipline of God is a lengthy process, taking place over time, in various phases. And yet, in 26:40-45, it seems that God will be quick to forgive them and restore them if they repent. What does this tell us about the character of God? (See also Psalm 103:8) What implications does this have for us, in our lives as Christians today?
Leviticus 26 seems to teach that it trusting in God, and walking with God, and obeying God, is actually better than living for yourself. And that if we trust and obey God, we will enjoy a better life than if we did not. Do you think this is true? (If so, how would you define the word “better”?) Why or why not? Have you found it to be true in your life? If so, how?
Some who teach salvation by works (that we earn God’s favor, through obedience, and though our own righteousness) have appealed to Leviticus 26 to support their claim. Would you agree or disagree with their interpretation? Why?
Some who teach prosperity theology (that we should expect, and are entitled to, physical, material, and financial blessing from God, in this life, if we obey, and believe strongly enough) have appealed to Leviticus 26 to support their claim. Would you agree or disagree with their interpretation? Why?
