List the ways that God commands us to love others in this passage.  Which of them strikes you as being particularly significant, or profound, or unexpected?  Why?

What does it mean for love to be genuine?  (12:9)  How can we strive to obey this command?  How can we still love others (and be genuine), even when we don’t feel like it?

What does it mean to show honor to someone?  (12:10)  What are some practical ways that we can do this with people in our lives?

Paul addresses the idea of retaliation and vengeance several times in this passage.  (12:14, 12:17, 12:19-21)  Why do you think that is?

What reasons does Paul give for why we should refrain from taking vengeance on others when they sin against us?  

Why is it important to rejoice with those who rejoice, and to weep with those who weep?  What purpose does this serve?  Why do you think that Paul commanded it?

How does the gospel help us to obey these commands to love others?

What is the difference between loving others (in a healthy way); and “using” them, or “idolizing” them, or “needing" them (in an unhealthy way)?  How can we cultivate the former, and guard against the latter?

Explain the relationship between love and hate.  Is it possible to love someone, without also hating the things that want to hurt them or harm them?  How can we cultivate godly love for others, and also cultivate a godly hatred for sin and evil?
