Read 10:2-4. What can we learn about the nation of Israel, and the nature of their pursuit of God? Are there ways where we should follow their example? Are there ways where we should learn from their mistakes?
In 10:5, Paul cites Leviticus 18:5 as being emblematic of “the righteousness that is based on the law”. How does this verse sum up what it looks like to pursue God through good works, and obedience to the law?
In 10:6-9, Paul cites Deuteronomy 30:12-14 as being emblematic of “the righteousness based on faith”. How do these verses sum up what it looks like to pursue (and be reconciled to) God through faith, as opposed to works or effort or merit?
What does Paul mean when he says the word (of the gospel of grace) is “near” us? (10:8) How is does that differ from the message of salvation by works?
According to 10:9-11, how can sinners be saved and reconciled to God? How can we be sure to do this in our own lives? How can we be actively encouraging those around us to do this?
In 10:13, Paul cites Joel 2:32 as being relevant to his discussion here about the gospel of Christ. Read Joel 2. What is that chapter about? How is it relevant to the gospel of salvation through faith in Christ? How can that chapter help us understand and appreciate what Christ has done for us?
